Did you know, just two years ago in 2011, an estimated 15.3 million international vacationers flocked into London? London, England boasts a great deal of architecture, history, and even its fair share of pop culture. What do tourists have to look forward to when planning a vacation in London?
Architecture
The reconstruction of today’s Westminster Abbey began as far back as 1245. Henry III chose the abbey for the site of his burial. Today, Westminster Abbey continues to act as a site for tourism, coronations, and even April 29 2013’s royal wedding, the wedding of monarch Prince William and Catherine Middleton. The entire abbey, with mostly Gothic influences, contains exquisitely detailed statues, ornaments, and windows. The city, however, is incredibly versatile, and also boasts notable, modern architecture. One classic example is the London Eye. The London Eye is, essentially, a giant Ferris wheel. In fact, to this day, it remains the largest Ferris wheel in Europe. Reaching heights of up to 443 feet and containing see-through capsules that give tourists a thrilling and unique glimpse of the city, it is not difficult to see why it is most loved paid tourist attraction in the U.K.
A Taste of History, and Today’s Pop Culture
Hotel bookings, especially in one of England’s most popular cities, are going quickly. Why? In 2008 and 2009, hotels in London dropped rates by as much as 20%, in order to make European vacations more affordable for the general public. Now, millions can enjoy London’s many museums, such as the National Museum of History and the British Museum, and the oldest zoo in the world, dating back to 1828, for even less. Better yet, pop culture icons Abbey Road and Harry Potter’s platform nine and three-quarters, allegedly located at Kings Cross, are right in the thick of London. Harry Potter fans can even book King cross hotels, to make sure they are that much closer to posing next to platform nine and three-quarters, where the station has posted a sign and a seemingly disappearing cart with wizard trunks and Hedwig’s cage.
The 2012 Olympics, hosted in London, attracted thousands of visitors, from all across the globe. Since then, even more people are coming to realize that London promises a variety of architecture, historical sites, inexpensive hotel bookings, and even sites from the Beatles’ famous album cover and J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter. See more: www.comfortinnandsuiteskingscross.co.uk
Not going to platform nine and three-quarters is one of my biggest regrets of my time in London. I would have loved to see it. Other than that, it was a completely wonderful experience. I highly recommend it!
I only had a couple of days in London as well, but I absolutely adored the little bit of London I was able to see. The London Eye is fantastic, Westminster Abbey is completely beautiful (nearly strained by neck looking at gorgeous high-up windows)!
