Picture it: an open stretch of land near a lake where the water laps against the shore and children play happily together while relaxed adults start the barbecue. This is the beauty of camping near a lake. Such camping excursions can involve both lake or river-based activities like boating and fishing and other land-focused activities like hiking. Given that more than 40 million Americans — equivalent to 14% of the U.S population aged six and over — camped in 2013, according to the 2014 American Camper Report, such lake-side camping expeditions are increasingly comm place and an excellent way to bond together as a family. There is always something to do for the whole family.
By spring 2014, more than 38 million Americans had gone backpacking or hiking over a year period, up from the 29.23 million that did the same in the same period in 2008. Almost 100% of campers were likely to camp again next year, according to the same report. In fact, on average most campers are planning almost 5 camping trips, with two-thirds planning three or more. Most Americans have happy memories of their first camping experience, which for over 85% took place between birth and the age of 15. This sets the foundation for a lifetime of happy camping holidays. Again early exposure to outdoor activities usually results in most choosing to continue the tradition into adulthood. Campgrounds with a pool make swimming an option; activity options are often available at camp sites too.
Camping and outdoor activities go hand in hand and as much as 87% of those who camp regularly say they also participate in several outdoor activities, although some (47%) are motivated purely by the joy of camping itself. Most camping trips — whether in a tent, a cabin, a yurt or an RV — last just under 15 days and campers travel far — about 186 miles — for their trips on average. In 2011, the combined time spent camping by all Americans was 534.9 million days, making camping vacations one of the most popular and attractive vacation options. Camping near a lake or other site that offers additional activities makes it an even more interesting holiday experience for campers of all ages. As a family vacation, family camping trips cannot be beat.
